The 2016 White Oak Dog Sled Race has been canceled due to icy, unsafe trail conditions.
To all of our dear mushers, volunteers and sponsors:
We regret to inform you that the race has been cancelled due to icy, unsafe trail conditions.
It has been a real roller coaster ride! About 2 weeks ago, we had a downpour of rain, and the trails were wiped out. Then, miraculously, we got LOTS of snow after that, enough to actually keep the race on schedule! Then, last Saturday, it was over 50 degrees here, and large portions of the trail melted down to bare grass and gravel. Then, last night, some areas of our trail rec’d several inches of snow!! CRAZY!
But, in the end, the trail between Deer River and Cohasset did not recover. This is the portion that is first to thaw, because it is out in the open running next to the highway. It is too icy to run the teams. As one musher said, everyone would have “to wear crash helmets” if we did the race on schedule. Well, we can’t have that!! So the race is definitely cancelled. We are scoping out a new route for next year, one that will not be so susceptible to warm weather, because the portions of this year’s trail that were back in the woods were still very “mushable.” (to coin a new word?)
We appreciate all of your support, and hard work, and training, and planning, and we look forward to working with all of you next year. If you would like your race registration fee held over until next year, please let me know by this Friday, March 4. And please contact me with any questions or comments.
